Sierść hiszpańskiego psa dowodnego nie linieje, jest wełnista i skręcona. Włosy tworzą loki, a kiedy są dłuższe mogą tworzyć sznury. Pielęgnacja to przede wszystkim utrzymanie włosa w czystości i zapobieganie tworzenia się kołtunów. Niestety ten rodzaj włosa ma tendencje do kołtunienia się dlatego wymaga ręcznego usuwania podszerstka. Wyskubujemy sierść przy skórze i formujemy loczek. Włos hiszpanków rośnie cały czas i ten zabieg należy powtarzać, aby sierść się nie skołtuniła. Ten rodzaj sierści nie należy szczotkować ponieważ włos sie napuszuje, stanie się miękki falujący i zatraci loczki.

Kąpiel
Pierwszym etapem nawilżenia jest kąpiel w odpowiednim szamponie. Najlepszy szampon jest dla psów szorstkowłosych. Szampon zawsze rozcieńczamy zgodnie z instrukcją, następnie gąbką lub myjką nakładamy na zmoczoną wcześniej sierść. Proszę pamiętać, aby szampon zawsze wcierać od skóry po końcówki włosa, nigdy nie mierzwić, nie wykonywać ruchów kulistych ponieważ skołtunimy sierść. Tak samo, gdy wycieramy psa. Wodę z sierści należy tylko odcisnąć ręcznikiem. Poniżej przedstawiam, te szampony, które my używamy i z których jesteśmy zadowolone.

Po wypłukaniu szamponu należy nałożyć maskę lub odżywkę natłuszczającą i pozostawić ją na włosie przez kilka minut a następnie spłukać. Tak odczyszczony i nawilżony włos pozostawiamy do wyschnięcia. Nie należy suszyć sierści suszarką bo się skołtuni i stanie miękka. Odżywki, które polecamy:

Wysuszoną lub jeszcze lekko wilgotną sierść można spryskać mgiełką do włosa kręconego i wymodelować loki.

Strzyżenie
Pierwsze strzyżenie należy wykonać najpóźniej do 7 miesiąca życia, aby pozbyć się szczenięcego włosa. Im wcześniej to zrobimy tym szybciej odrośnie sierść z loczkami. Psa nie wystawowego strzyże się 2 - 3 razy w roku, natomiast wystawowego dostosowuje się do kalendarza wystaw. Na wystawie dopuszczony jest włos co najmniej 3 cm, tak aby sędzia mógł ocenić jakość skrętu. Maksymalna długość włosa to 12 cm, a po rozprostowaniu 15 cm.
Sierść należy przystrzyc na równą na całym ciele długość 3 mm lub dłuższą. Strzyżenie krótsze niż 3 mm może spowodować podrażnienie skóry. Dlatego w momencie, gdy zauważymy pierwsze kołtunienie się włosa należy go ściąć lub zacząć formować loczki.
How to care of the Spanish Water Dog's coat?
The coat of the Spanish Water Dog does not shed, it is wooly and curly. The hair forms curls, and when it is longer, it can form cords. The care is primarily about keeping the hair clean and preventing the formation of tangles. Unfortunately, this type of hair tends to tangle, so it requires manual removal of the undercoat. We pluck the hair near the skin and form a curl. The felted strand of hair should be divided into smaller strands and plucked so that the skin is visible around each curl. Spanish hair grows all the time and this treatment should be repeated so that the coat does not become tangled. This type of coat should not be brushed as the hair will frizz, become soft, wavy and loose curls.

Bath
The first stage of moisturizing is bathing using a suitable shampoo. The best shampoo is for wirehaired dogs. The shampoo should always be diluted according to the instructions, then apply it with a sponge or washcloth to the previously wet hair. Please remember to always rub the shampoo from the skin to the ends of the hair, never tousle, do not make spherical movements because it will tangle the hair. It's the same while wiping the dog. The water from the coat should only be squeezed with a towel. Below there is a list of shampoos we use and are happy with.

After rinsing out the shampoo, apply a greasing mask or conditioner and leave it on the hair for a few minutes, then rinse. Leave the cleaned and moisturized hair to dry. Do not use a hair dryer to dry the coat, as it will tangle and become soft. Conditioners that we recommend:

Dried or still slightly damp hair can be sprayed with a mist for curly hair and modeled curls.

Clipping
The first haircut should be done no later than 7 months of age to get rid of puppy hair. The sooner we do this, the faster the curly hair will grow back. The non-show dog is sheared 2 - 3 times a year, while the show dog is adjusted to the exhibition calendar. Hair of at least 3 cm is allowed on the show so that the judge can assess the quality of the twist. The maximum length of the hair is 12 cm, and after straightening it is 15 cm.
The coat should be trimmed to an even length of 3mm or longer all over the body. Cutting shorter than 3mm may cause skin irritation. Therefore, when you notice the first tangle of hair, you should cut it or start forming curls.
